Cummins generator repair, service and fault diagnosis
Cummins-powered sets are the ones people arrive with a code rather than a symptom. The controller has raised something, latched a shutdown, and the site needs to know whether it is a sensor, a circuit or a genuine engine fault before anyone presses reset.
Before you diagnose one
A Cummins set is often Cummins at both ends
Cummins builds the engine, and Cummins Generator Technologies owns the Stamford alternator range that sits on a very large share of the world's generating sets — including many that carry a different badge entirely. Onan is also a Cummins brand; the compact marine and mobile sets are dealt with on Onan generator repair.
The practical consequence is that engine, alternator and controller are frequently designed to talk to each other — convenient when the system is healthy, and confusing when it is not, because a fault raised at the panel may have originated in the engine's own control system and simply been passed along.

Reading a fault before acting on it
Three things a controller can be telling you
Separating them is the single most useful discipline on a Cummins set.
- A warning
The set is still running and flagging a condition. It is information, and it is usually the cheapest moment to act.
- A derate
The engine's own control system is reducing what it will deliver to protect itself. The set runs but will not carry its rating, and the reason is recorded.
- A shutdown
The set has already stopped and latched. The latched alarm is the fault; the lockout is only its consequence. Resetting without reading is how a low oil pressure shutdown becomes a bearing failure.
A code is a circuit and a reason, not a broken part. It names where the control system saw something out of range and how — high, low, erratic, or no signal at all. A sensor reading out of range is as likely to be a chafed harness, a corroded connector, a poor earth or a supply problem as a failed sensor.
In this climate, corroded and heat-aged connections in a genset panel are extremely common, and they produce codes that point at perfectly good components.
A code means what the manual for your controller and your engine says it means, and lists copied between websites go stale and mislead. Send us the code and the controller type and you will get the answer for your set.
The method
Fixed order, every time
- Read the stored codes and the event logIncluding what the set was doing when each was raised.
- Verify the circuitSupply, signal, return and earth — before condemning anything.
- Check against a physical measurementWhere one can be taken, compare it with what the controller believes.
- Only then does a part get changedAnd the report says what was measured, not only what was fitted.

Starting and control
- Locked out and refusing to reset, with a latched shutdown underneath the lockout
- Fail to start or fail to crank on automatic, with the set starting normally on manual
- Speed sensing or magnetic pickup faults, where the controller cannot see engine speed
- Data link and communication faults between the controller and the engine's control system
Circuits and sensors
- Sensor circuit codes on oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level or charge air, where the circuit rather than the sensor is at fault
- Charge alternator or battery charger alarms — the set runs until the battery is flat
- Corroded and heat-aged panel connections producing intermittent faults
Output and changeover
- Loss of output, low or unstable voltage, and AVR faults
- Alternator winding and diode faults, and insulation resistance failures after damp lay-up
- Overspeed and under-frequency trips, from genuine governing faults or from trip settings that do not suit the installation
- The set failing to respond to a genuine mains failure
Engine side
- High-temperature shutdowns under load, which in this climate are usually cooling rather than engine
- Loss of power, smoke and fuel faults
- Blow-by, oil consumption and low oil pressure on high-hour sets

Panel, alternator, engine
- Controller and panel diagnosis: stored codes, event log, live readings, circuit verification, reconfiguration, and replacement where a module is genuinely finished
- AVR replacement and voltage setting; excitation chain diagnosis
- Alternator testing, insulation resistance, diode and winding work, and rewinding in our own bay
- AMF and ATS testing, repair and retrofit, proved on a simulated mains failure
- Scheduled servicing to the engine manufacturer's schedule, readings logged, written report
- Cooling system work, radiator cleaning, repair and re-coring
- Fuel tank cleaning, injection equipment tested and calibrated on our own benches
- Load bank testing with a written report
- Engine overhaul, with the crankshaft, block and head machined in our own shop
If your set is inside its manufacturer warranty period, repair work outside the authorised network can affect that cover, and the sensible answer is the dealer. We will say so on the phone rather than take the job.
Out of warranty, the position reverses. We are not tied to a supply channel, so parts are quoted from whichever channel suits you — manufacturer-supplied where your policy requires it, quality aftermarket where that is sensible — with the quotation stating which is which. On older Cummins genset engines the more valuable capability is frequently not sourcing a part at all: it is measuring the component you already own and machining it back to specification.
Diagnostic tooling is a fair question to ask any workshop, including this one. Ask what is held for your specific controller and engine before committing, and take a straight answer as the qualification it is.

Are you a Cummins service centre?
No. We hold no dealership or service appointment with Cummins, and we say so on our own site. We are an independent workshop that repairs and services Cummins generator sets.
My Cummins generator shows a fault code. Can you tell me what it means over the phone?
Send the code, the controller type and what the set was doing when it appeared, and we will tell you what it points at and whether it is safe to attempt a reset. What we will not do is guess from a generic list — a code names a circuit and a reason, and the meaning is specific to your controller and engine.
The set is locked out and will not reset. What should I do?
Do not keep pressing reset. Read the alarm underneath the lockout — that is the actual fault, and some of the alarms that cause a lockout will destroy an engine if the set is restarted. Photograph the display and call +971 50 767 9050.
Is my Stamford alternator a Cummins product?
Stamford is part of Cummins Generator Technologies, which is why Cummins sets so often carry Stamford alternators — and why sets from many other packagers do too. Either way we work on them as an independent repairer, including rewinding in our own winding bay.
