Engine repair for ports and terminal operators

A terminal is measured on equipment availability and on moves per hour. A single reach stacker or RTG out of service is a hole in the plan for as long as it lasts — and that changes what a good supplier looks like. This page is the diesel plant on the quay and in the yard, not the vessels.

The fleet

The plant we are talking about

A container or bulk terminal runs a surprisingly wide diesel fleet, and almost none of it is a vessel.

  • RTG and rubber-tyred crane power packs — a diesel engine driving an alternator, which is a generator set in everything but name. The engine side and the alternator side are both work we do.
  • Reach stackers and empty container handlers — heavy industrial engines under near-continuous duty.
  • Terminal tractors and yard trucks — short shuttle cycles, constant load changes, high hours accumulated fast.
  • Mobile harbour crane and quayside crane engines, and the standby sets that back up shore supply.
  • Forklifts, loaders and sweepers across the yard and the sheds.
  • Port-owned craft — tugs, mooring boats, pilot and line boats. The engine work on those follows the marine route rather than this one.

They are ordinary industrial diesel engines in an unusually hard duty cycle: salt air, dust, heat, long idling periods at low load, and a maintenance window that only exists between shifts.

The move rate, not the repair

What actually costs a terminal money

Cheapest quotation is not the objective. Shortest honest time to back-in-service is, followed closely by not having to do the job twice. Three things drive that time in this market, and only one of them is the mechanical work.

Spares lead time on plant-specific engines

  • Handling equipment tends to carry engine models that are common globally and thin on the ground locally
  • Waiting for a crankshaft, a head or a liner set to arrive is where weeks go
  • The alternative is machining the component already in the yard — crankshaft grinding, boring, honing, head surfacing, connecting-rod boring and line boring in one building, by the people who measured the part in the first place

The subcontract handover

  • A workshop that does not own machines has to pass the machining on, and the queue it joins is not yours to manage
  • You get told a date, not a reason
  • Subcontracting is common in this market; we would rather answer for our own schedule

Diagnosis that goes round twice

  • Low power on a terminal tractor, black smoke on a reach stacker, an RTG set that will not hold load — these get replaced-at until they stop
  • Fuel injection equipment is the usual culprit, and it is settled on a bench, not on the machine
  • Pumps, injectors and governors stripped, tested and calibrated in our own department

  • Stator and rotor rewinding, diode and regulator faults, and testing under load before it goes back on

How the work splits between your yard and ours

  1. In your yardFault finding, compression and blow-by testing, injector and pump changes, turbocharger removal and refitting, cooling and lubrication work, top-end work where the machine can be worked on where it stands, and running and load checks afterwards. Scope on on-site and in-situ repair.
  2. Back to SharjahAnything that needs a machine tool or a test bench — crankshafts, blocks, heads, connecting rods, injection pumps, injectors, turbochargers, alternator windings. In most cases the component travels and the machine stays: you lose a part, not an asset.

In practice

Working inside a port

Ports are not ordinary sites, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's morning.

Access takes longer than the driveGate passes, ISPS-controlled areas, vehicle permits and escorting all have lead times. Tell us the requirement at enquiry stage and it is dealt with before an engineer sets off rather than at the barrier.
The window is a shift, not a dayEquipment comes free when the operation lets it go. We plan the visit around that and remove anything likely to travel on the same attendance, rather than booking a second one.

Repair or replace is a measurement — ask for that first

The decision that costs a terminal real money is whether a major component is still serviceable, and that is a reading rather than an opinion. A crankshaft turns on ovality, hardness, bend and crack depth, and on how much material remains above the manufacturer's bottom permitted undersize. A block turns on liner bore wear, taper, ovality and main bearing bore alignment. A head turns on flatness, seat recession and cracks. So the low-commitment first step is not a quotation — send the component and let us measure it. You get the figures with the limits beside them, and a maintenance budget argument stops being a debate. If the part is past recovery we will say so, because a wrong repair on a machine you need every shift is more expensive than a right replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work on the vessels as well as the yard equipment?

Yes, but they are different pages. Tugs, mooring boats and any vessel-side engine work is covered on marine and shipping. This page is the shore-side fleet.

Can you attend inside the port, or does equipment have to come out?

Both are normal. Diagnostics and most mechanical work happen where the machine stands. Machining and bench calibration come to Sharjah. Tell us the access and pass requirement when you enquire.

An RTG generator engine will not take load. Is that an engine fault or an alternator fault?

It is one of the two and it is testable. We take the engine-side readings and the electrical-side readings rather than guessing, because replacing the wrong half of a power pack is an expensive way to find out.

Do you hold spares for handling equipment engines?

Spares are sourced against the job and we are not tied to one channel, so genuine and quality aftermarket are both quotable and the choice is stated on the quotation. Where a component can be machined instead of bought, that option is put in front of you.

Can you take on a fleet maintenance arrangement rather than job-by-job work?

Yes. AMC and maintenance agreements are offered and every one is built around the site, the equipment list and the availability targets, so it starts with a conversation rather than a price list.
