Diesel engine and machine shop work behind Yerevan Steel Factory

If you are choosing between diesel repairers in Sharjah, the question worth asking is who owns the machines. We do, and they are on this plot — which is why a crankshaft that arrives here does not leave the building.

Finding the gate

Give a driver the steel factory, not a plot number. Yerevan Steel Factory is the landmark this area is navigated by, and the workshop sits directly behind it. A pickup with a crankshaft on the bed, or a flatbed with an engine on a skid, finds the gate on the first pass with that instruction.

Why come to Industrial Area 15 rather than a workshop closer to you

In this market a great many engine repairers subcontract their machining. A crankshaft leaves their premises, joins a queue somewhere else, and comes back when it comes back. Here it does not leave the building, and the schedule is ours to answer for. That is the whole argument for the drive. Deliveries arrive at the yard rather than through an office — tell us before a heavy component travels so the bay and the lifting are free when the vehicle arrives, and it goes straight off the truck and onto a machine instead of standing in the sun.

On this plot

The machine shop, and the departments built around it

The practical effect of having all of it on one plot is that a job does not get split across three companies. An engine arriving with a scored crankshaft, a bowed head and two dead injectors is one job here — one set of measurements, one person to ring.

The machine shop

  • Crankshaft grinding, line boring, cylinder boring and honing, cylinder head surfacing, connecting-rod boring, turning, milling and surface grinding and press work
  • The advantage is not the machinery itself; it is that a component is measured, machined and re-measured in one place, by the people who answer for the result
  • Sending it out adds a handover, a queue and a second set of handling risks — and you control none of the three
How a job runs →

Fuel injection benches

  • Injection pumps, injectors and governors stripped, tested and calibrated for marine and industrial engines
  • A fuel fault is confirmed on a bench rather than argued about on an engine
Fuel systems →

Engine bays

  • Complete strip, measure, rebuild and run
  • From small plant engines to marine auxiliaries and large genset engines
Engine overhaul →

Alternator, electrical and turbo

  • Stator and rotor rewinding, control panels, starter motors and charging alternators, tested under load before they go back on
  • Turbocharger bench: strip, rebuild and balance, with the failure cause stated
  • Bringing in a complete generator set rather than a loose engine is a different conversation — it is set out on generator repair in Sharjah rather than repeated here

Who arrives at this gate

Three kinds of enquiry, for three different reasons

01

Fleet, plant and facilities operators across Sharjah

Industrial Areas 1 to 18, Al Sajaa, Hamriyah Free Zone, SAIF Zone and the Emirates Road corridor. For these customers we are the nearest workshop that can take the whole job, engine and machining, without handing half of it on.

02

Marine operators

Working out of Hamriyah and Port Khalid, and from Dubai and Fujairah. Main engine and auxiliary components come ashore, get machined here and go back — see marine and shipping.

03

Other workshops

Machining work is sent to us by repairers who do not own the machines. That is ordinary in this trade and worth saying plainly, because it is the strongest evidence that the machine shop is real: people whose own reputation depends on the result send their components here.

04

What they have in common

Ready-mix and crushing plant off the Al Sajaa quarry roads, tower cranes and site gensets on the Emirates Road corridor, workboats and barges out of Hamriyah and Port Khalid, standby sets and fire pumps in the industrial-area factories, and transport yards running their own fleets. The machine earns while it runs, and the workshop is a short drive away rather than a shipment away.

Before you set off

Getting an engine, a component or a vehicle here

Lifting is arranged against the component rather than assumed. That one phone call is the difference between a component going straight onto a machine and a truck waiting in the yard.

What normally arrives

  • Components — a crankshaft, a head, a con rod, an injection pump, a turbo, an alternator. The fastest route through the shop, because the machine can start on them the day they land
  • A complete engine on a pallet or a skid, lifted off at the yard
  • A vehicle or plant item driven in for diagnosis, where the engine stays where it is
  • Marine components brought ashore, usually timed against a vessel's window rather than a working day
  • A complete generator set is its own arrangement — see generator repair in Sharjah

Walking in

  • You can arrive with a component and no appointment
  • Bring the data plate details — engine make, model and serial or engine number. A photograph is enough
  • Bring the failed part with its mating parts where it makes sense: a crankshaft with its bearing shells tells us more than the crankshaft alone, because the shells record how it failed
  • Say what the engine was doing when it stopped — the symptom narrows the measurement list

For anything that needs lifting, call ahead so the bay and the equipment are free.

Beyond Sharjah

  • The workshop serves Sharjah and the northern emirates directly, and engineers work on site across the UAE
  • Dubai is handled largely on site, with components travelling back here
  • Ajman is the adjacent industrial belt — often a same-day component run
  • Generator sets specifically, and what can and cannot be done at this workshop with one, are on generator repair in Sharjah

The most useful thing you can do with a workshop this close

Ask us to measure it before you ask us to quote it

Whether a crankshaft can be ground rather than replaced is not a matter of opinion: it turns on ovality, hardness, bend and crack depth, and on how much material is left above the manufacturer's bottom undersize. The same is true of a head — flatness, seat recession, cracks — and of a liner, and of a connecting rod.

Those are readings, not judgements, and they take a fraction of the time an argument about them does. Drop the component here and you get the readings with the manufacturer's limits beside them, and only then a scope and a price. If the part is beyond recovery we will tell you that too, which is a cheaper answer to receive here than after a rebuild.

What a finished job leaves with

The record

  1. Customer and locationNamed where permission is given, otherwise described — a Sharjah crushing contractor; a standby set in an Industrial Area factory.
  2. Equipment and problemEngine make, model, rating and age, and the fault as the operator described it.
  3. Scope of workWhat was actually done, in order, and the single operation the job turned on.
  4. MeasurementsWhat was found, what it was machined to, and the limits both sat against.
  5. Downtime and resultHow long the machine was out of service, what went back and what it was tested to.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly are you?

Behind Yerevan Steel Factory, Industrial Area 15, Maliha Road, Sharjah. Give the steel factory to your driver — it is the landmark the area is navigated by. Call +971 50 767 9050 and we will direct you in.

Can I come without an appointment?

Yes, for diagnosis and for dropping components. Call ahead if anything needs lifting off a vehicle, so the bay and the lifting equipment are free when you arrive.

What are your opening hours?

Open seven days a week, 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, including Friday.

Do you only work in Sharjah?

No. The workshop is in Sharjah; the engineers work across the UAE, and components come here from Dubai, Ajman, Abu Dhabi and the ports.

Do you do the machining yourselves, or send it out?

Ourselves. The crankshaft grinder, the line borer, the boring and honing machines and the head surfacer are on this site. That is the reason most of our customers chose us.

Are you certified?

Abra Diesel is ISO 9001:2015 certified, certificate number 211495. Established 2011, with over 25 years of experience.

Can I watch the work being done?

On a machining job, yes, by arrangement. Customers who have been told for years that machining happens “somewhere else” tend to want to see the machine, and we would rather they did. See our facility.
