Perkins generator repair, service and troubleshooting
Perkins-powered sets sit under a very large share of the UAE's building standby installations — in the basement plant room, on the roof, in the compound behind the villa block — bought with the building and then largely forgotten until the mains drop.
The real fault list
The problem with a Perkins standby set is usually that it never runs
These engines are long-lived and, in the field, remarkably tolerant. What we are called to is rarely about the engine's design and almost always about the regime the set has lived under.
A building standby set typically accumulates a handful of running hours a year against thousands of idle ones, and most of those hours are off-load or very lightly loaded during a monthly test start. That produces a predictable list — and it is a list of set faults rather than engine faults.
- Fuel aged in the base tank, with water and contamination grown through years of standing
- Batteries baked by ambient heat and never load tested
- A radiator core silted with dust and sand, in a plant room recirculating its own hot air
- An alternator whose windings have sat in humid air with no insulation resistance reading ever taken
- A controller whose configuration was changed at some point by somebody, with no record of what or why
- A changeover arrangement that has not seen a genuine mains failure since commissioning
- Coolant that has lost its inhibitor and, on wet-liner engines, its supplemental additive
None of that is found by starting it for ten minutes
All of it is found by servicing the set properly and by loading it. That is the argument for preventive maintenance and load bank testing on a standby set — and it is a stronger argument here than in most markets, because the ambient conditions accelerate every item on the list.

Six situations, and where each one actually sits
It will not start on auto
- Batteries and charging first
- Then the controller's start sequence, crank disconnect and speed sensing
- The fuel solenoid and its output
- Mains sensing, if the failure is only on automatic operation
- A set that starts on manual but not on auto does not have an engine problem
It starts, then stops
- Fuel supply on a tank that has never been cleaned
- An air leak on the suction side
- A shutdown latching on the controller — read the alarm before assuming the engine
No output, or unstable output
- With the engine running well, that is the alternator end: sensing fuses, the AVR, lost residual magnetism on a shunt-excited machine, rotating diodes, or the windings
- Voltage right but frequency wandering is a governing or fuelling fault — the AVR is chasing it, and chasing the AVR instead is the commonest wasted visit on this kind of set
Heat, load and hours
- Shuts down on high temperature under load but runs fine off-load — cooling, in this climate, nearly always
- Will not carry the load it used to — air, fuel, turbocharger or compression, in that order of cost, and proving it is a load test rather than an opinion
- Smoke, blow-by, oil consumption, low oil pressure — now you are into the engine

Before you call
Identifying your set
Perkins genset engines are identified by series and by the engine number on the plate, and that number governs the service schedule, the parts and the settings.
- Photograph the engine data plateThe engine number and serial. Not the canopy badge.
- Photograph the alternator data plateIt will very often carry a different manufacturer's name entirely.
- Photograph the controller, if it is showing anythingA code names a circuit and a reason, and it belongs to that specific controller.
A Perkins-engined set is a Perkins engine bolted to somebody else's alternator, in somebody else's enclosure, with somebody else's controller in the door. Diagnosing it means knowing all three.

We are not tied to a supply channel, so parts are quoted from whichever channel suits you — manufacturer-supplied where you want it or the application demands it, quality aftermarket where that is the sensible choice — with the quotation stating which is which. On older genset engines the more useful capability is often not sourcing a part at all: measuring the component you already own and machining it back to specification. Perkins sets, answered
Are you a Perkins dealer or service centre?
No. We hold no dealership or service appointment with Perkins or any other manufacturer. We are an independent workshop that repairs and overhauls Perkins-powered generator sets, and we say so plainly.
My Perkins generator starts but will not take load. Where do I start?
Check whether the engine is holding speed. If frequency is stable and there is no output or unstable output, the fault is at the alternator end — sensing fuses, AVR, diodes or windings. If frequency sags or hunts when load is applied, it is fuelling, air or governing and the alternator is innocent. That single check separates two completely different repairs.
How often should a Perkins standby generator be serviced?
To the schedule in that engine's own manual, and on a standby set by the calendar as well as the hour meter — because a set running twenty hours a year will never reach a running-hours interval while its fuel, coolant, batteries and rubber age regardless. Can you overhaul the engine in a Perkins genset?

My set is an FG Wilson. Is that the same as a Perkins?

Do you attend Perkins sets on site, or does the set come to you?
Both. Servicing, diagnosis, alternator and control faults, cooling and fuel work, and load testing are done at your site. Rewinding and engine machining come back to Industrial Area 15, because those machines do not travel.
