Perkins diesel engine repair and overhaul
Most of the Perkins engines that reach us are not in trucks or tractors. They are in generator sets and fire pumps — the two applications where an engine stands still for years, then has to carry full load on the worst day of the year.
Identifying your engine
The honest shape of the Perkins work that arrives
Rather than publish a list of every series Perkins builds, here is what actually comes through the door.
Genset engines
- The four and six cylinder industrial units under a very large share of the UAE's small and mid-size standby sets
- The heavier multi-cylinder frames under the larger ones
- Starting and fuel faults, cooling and overheating, blow-by and oil consumption on high-hour sets, turbocharger faults, injection pump and injector calibration, full overhaul
Fire pump engines
- The packaged diesel fire pump sets found across UAE buildings
- Their own discipline, with their own failure pattern — set out below
Industrial and plant
- Compact units in pumps, compressors, welders and lighting towers
- Larger industrial installations where the engine drives something that is not a vehicle
Send the engine number
- A Perkins engine number identifies the build precisely, including the parts and clearances that apply to it
- A series name alone will not do that; the number will
- Where an engine is electronically managed, say so at enquiry stage and we will confirm what we can and cannot do on the control side before you commit
Two applications, two failure patterns
Where these engines actually live

01
Perkins in fire pumps
A fire pump engine is a strange machine to maintain. It runs for a few minutes a week under a no-flow churn test, is never asked to do anything until the day it is asked to do everything, and its failure is discovered by a fire officer rather than by a plant operator. The faults are consistent:
- Batteries and charging. Most failed weekly tests are an electrical failure to crank, not an engine failure. The controller runs dual battery sets for a reason.
- Fuel that has aged in the tank. A day tank topped up but never drawn down grows water and microbial contamination in this climate; the first symptom is a blocked filter under load.
- The raw-water cooling loop. Blocked cooling lines, a clogged strainer or a failed solenoid show up as high temperature only when the set is finally run properly.
- Churn-test-only running. Unburnt fuel, glazed bores and a wet exhaust — the same wet-stacking problem standby gensets have, and only cleared by real load.
- Overspeed and shutdown circuits that have never been function-tested since commissioning.
What we do about it. The engine: servicing, fault diagnosis, fuel and cooling work, starting and charging faults, injection pump and injector calibration, cylinder head and bottom-end work, and full overhaul. That is the half of the set that fails quietly between tests. Tell us at enquiry stage what the building's regime requires and we will say plainly which parts of it fall to us and which do not — see fire protection and FM.

02
Perkins in generator sets
The engine side of standby and prime-rated sets, from small building standby units up to the heavier frames under larger installations. A standby set is the hardest duty an engine gets, because it is barely a duty at all: it idles through a weekly test, never reaches temperature, and is then asked for full load in a power cut.
The faults that follow are predictable — glazed bores and wet exhausts from years of light running, fuel that has aged in the day tank, injectors that have not been off the engine since commissioning, and cooling systems that have quietly silted up. All of it is engine-side work, and all of it is cheaper to find on a scheduled run than during an outage.
Where the boundary sits. The alternator, control panel and load-testing half is genset work rather than engine work. It is covered on generator repair and service and, brand by brand, on Perkins generator repair — or on FG Wilson generator repair where the canopy carries that badge and the engine underneath is Perkins. If the set is running rough, will not start or will not hold load, diesel generator troubleshooting walks the faults in order.
Scope
What we do on a Perkins engine
- Full overhaul — strip, measure, machine, rebuild and run. See diesel engine overhaul.
- Cylinder head rebuilding — valves and seats reconditioned, deck surfaced, pressure tested. See cylinder head reconditioning.
- Crankshaft grinding, block machining, line boring and reboring — in our own machine shop, rather than sent to a subcontractor.
- Fuel systems — injection pumps, injectors and governors stripped, tested and calibrated on our benches. See fuel systems and calibration.
- Turbochargers — stripped, rebuilt and balanced.
- Starter motors and charging alternators — bench overhaul and testing.
- Cooling — radiators, heat exchangers and oil coolers cleaned and pressure tested.
The expensive decision on a high-hour Perkins is whether this crankshaft, this block and this head are still within limits — a measurement, not an opinion, and not something to settle from a photograph. A crankshaft turns on ovality, hardness, bend and crack depth, and on the material left above the manufacturer's bottom permitted undersize. A block turns on bore wear, taper, ovality and main bearing bore alignment. A head turns on flatness, seat recession and cracks. Each is a number with a published limit beside it, and every reading is taken in the same building where the machining would happen. Send the component and let us measure it. If the part is past recovery you will be told so, because a wrong repair on a standby set or a fire pump is more expensive than a right replacement — and on both, the cost is not counted in parts.
- Warranty first
If the engine or the packaged set is inside its manufacturer warranty, work outside the authorised network can affect cover. Use the dealer — we will say so on the phone.
- Parts policy
Some fleet, marine and life-safety contracts require manufacturer-supplied parts only, and a fire pump installation is exactly the kind of contract that might. If yours does, that points at the dealer.
- Otherwise, machining wins
Authorised networks generally replace major components. Our machine shop exists to give the other answer, and on an older series that difference is measured in weeks.
- Ask about tooling
Dealers hold full factory tooling and current bulletins as a matter of course. An independent workshop has what it has invested in. Ask any workshop — including us.

Frequently asked questions
Are you a Perkins dealer?
No. We hold no brand dealership of any kind, and we say so on our own site. We are an independent workshop that repairs and overhauls Perkins engines.
Can you service a Perkins fire pump engine?
Yes — engine-side servicing, fault diagnosis, fuel and cooling work, starting and charging faults, fuel system calibration and full overhaul. Tell us what your building's regime asks for and we will say which parts of it are ours and which are not, before an attendance is booked.
Which Perkins series can you overhaul?
Send the engine number from the plate rather than the series alone — a Perkins engine number identifies the build precisely, and it is what determines parts and clearances. We will tell you whether it is a job we take before you move the engine.
Do you use genuine Perkins parts?
We quote genuine parts where you want them or your policy requires them, and quality aftermarket where that is the sensible choice — and the quotation states which is which. We are not restricted to one supply channel. Parts are sourced per job, and the realistic wait is given to you before you commit rather than discovered halfway through the repair.
My Perkins generator will not hold load. Is that an engine fault?
Often not. Voltage that collapses under load is usually the alternator or the AVR; frequency that droops is usually the engine. Which one it is decides who fixes it — start at generator troubleshooting.
Can you rebuild a Perkins cylinder head?
Yes. Heads are stripped, valves and seats reconditioned, decks surfaced and units pressure tested, with the machining done here rather than sent out.
