Standby and critical power generator engine servicing
You are paying to own a machine on the assumption that it will work on a day you cannot predict. This page is for the people who own the consequence when it does not.
The problem, stated plainly
Almost everything about how standby plant is operated weakens that assumption
Four things are quietly true of nearly every standby estate in this market.
The monthly off-load start proves the least useful thing
It proves the set starts. It does not prove it will accept the building's load, hold frequency through a step change, carry that load for hours, or reject it cleanly at the end. Every failure that matters lives in the part the monthly start does not test.
Light running is doing damage while you watch it
A set exercised off load, or carrying a fraction of its rating, never reaches proper cylinder temperatures. Fuel that does not burn cleanly glazes bores, carbons valves and rings, and wets the exhaust — wet stacking. The set looks healthy on the log sheet and loses its ability to make full power. The cure is load, applied properly and early.
Fuel ages in the tank
Bulk diesel sitting for years in a warm plant room grows water, sediment and microbial growth at the interface. It blocks filters, damages injection equipment, and does it at the moment of demand.
Nobody sees the ageing
A standby fleet degrades silently and simultaneously — all commissioned at the same time, all having run the same nothing hours, all developing the same problems in the same year. That is a capital planning issue disguised as a maintenance one.

What the engine side of critical power actually needs
Whole-genset repair is on generator repair and service; this is the engine argument.
Load proving
- The set loaded in steps to its rating with readings recorded at each step, so what you hold afterwards is evidence rather than an assurance
- An untested standby set is an assumption on a risk register, and the audit that eventually asks about it will not accept a monthly start log
Engine-side condition work
- Fuel condition and injection equipment
- Cooling capability at full load and at UAE ambient
- Air intake and exhaust restriction
- Governing and speed control; starting and charging
- Pumps, injectors and governors stripped, tested and calibrated on our own benches
Control and governing faults
- On a critical set these produce the worst outcomes: a set that starts and will not take load, hunts under a step change, trips on under-frequency, or locks out and refuses to reset
- Circuit-level diagnosis rather than component swapping
Alternator side, and overhaul
- Excitation, AVR behaviour, windings and load testing where the fault is electrical rather than mechanical
- Overhaul on ageing sets, with heads, liners, crankshafts and connecting rods machined in our own shop rather than ordered in
- Scheduled servicing, including under maintenance agreements — set against the site, the redundancy arrangement and the windows rather than sold from a table

This is what separates critical power from ordinary generator work, and it is a planning problem more than a technical one.

The capital question
Ageing standby fleets: the decision nobody wants to take
The expensive question on a fifteen-year-old standby estate is not the service schedule. It is which sets to spend capital on and which to keep maintaining — and it is normally answered by whoever is loudest rather than by evidence.
It is a measurable question. Whether an engine is recoverable turns on readings: crankshaft ovality, hardness, bend and crack depth, and the material remaining above the manufacturer's bottom permitted undersize; liner bore wear, taper and ovality; head flatness, seat recession and cracks. Whether the set can still do its job turns on what it does under load.
Both sets of readings are taken by us, and the machining that follows a favourable answer happens in the same building at Industrial Area 15, Sharjah. That is the practical reason repair is genuinely on the table here: a supplier without machine tools has one answer available to it, and it is the expensive one.
You get the figures with the limits beside them, which is what a capital paper actually needs. Where a set is past economic recovery, we will say so. We hold no brand dealership, so there is no equipment sale sitting behind the recommendation.

Site or workshop
- On your site: diagnosis, servicing, panel and controller work, sensors, cooling and fuel work, load proving
- In the workshop: rewinding, machining, injection calibration and full overhauls — those machines do not travel
- We tell you which at the outset, not after a van has been sent and a day lost

Frequently asked questions
Our sets start every month without fail. Is that not enough?
It is evidence that they start. It is not evidence that they will carry the building, hold frequency through a step load or run for hours, and those are the things that fail. Load proving is what closes that gap — see generator load bank testing.
Do you do the engine side only, or the whole generator set?
Both. The engine is our core specialism and it is where this page is written from, but alternators, control panels and whole-set work are handled in the same building. The generator pillar covers that side in detail.
We cannot take a set offline. Can you still do anything useful?
Yes — condition assessment, fuel and oil sampling, inspection and much of the diagnosis can be done without taking cover away. What cannot be done that way is proving the set under load, and we will tell you plainly which is which rather than let a partial job be recorded as a full one.
Can you work across a portfolio of buildings rather than one site?
Yes, planned as a programme rather than as a series of callouts. AMC and maintenance agreements are offered and are built around your sites, redundancy and windows.
Our set failed to take load during a real outage. What now?
That is a diagnosis job with a short list of likely causes — fuel, air, cooling, governing, excitation or an engine that can no longer make its rating — and each is testable. Phone rather than email: +971 50 767 9050.
Is a wet-stacked set a write-off?
Usually not. It is an engine that has been asked to do nothing for years, and the route back normally runs through proper loading, injection equipment work and, where the damage has gone further, a top or major overhaul. The measurements decide which.
