The second problem is organisational

On most UAE estates the fire pump has two suppliers — a fire protection contractor who understands the system, and a general maintenance provider who understands neither the engine nor the system particularly well. The engine sits in the seam. It is inspected as part of a fire system by people who are not engine specialists, and serviced as part of a plant room by people who treat it as a small generator. It is not one: its duty cycle, its cooling arrangement and its shutdown philosophy are all unlike a genset's. The mechanics are set out on the fire pump engine page.

The commercial case

Why an FM company brings in an engine specialist

Because the alternative to repairing a fire pump engine is usually replacing the set, and replacing a set is a project: procurement, lead time, plant room access, a building without cover in between, and a capital line nobody budgeted.

Whether the engine can be repaired is a measurement rather than an opinion, and the measurements are taken in the same building that would do the machining if the answer is favourable. Crankshaft grinding, cylinder boring and honing, head surfacing, connecting rod boring and line boring are all in house at Industrial Area 15, Sharjah. So the first thing to ask for is not a quotation. It is a measurement.

    What was found, what was measured against which limits, what was done, which parts were used and whether they were genuine or aftermarket, and anything found that sits outside our scope. Agree the format at the start.

Caterpillar, Cummins, Volvo Penta, Deutz and Iveco units also reach us. Send a photograph of the engine data plate and the pump controller and you will get a straight answer about whether it is a job we take. We hold no brand dealership; manufacturer names identify the equipment serviced.

Do you carry out fire pump testing and certification?

We test and prove the engine's own condition and function and we write down what we find. Statutory inspection, certification and sign-off of a building's fire protection installation is not something we present ourselves as providing. Tell us what your regime demands and you will get a straight answer about the split before anyone is booked.

Can you service the pump as well as the engine?

Our scope is the engine and its supporting systems. The pump end and the hydraulic performance of the installation belong with your fire protection contractor, and we would rather say so than let it be assumed.

We have twelve buildings and no idea what condition the sets are in. Where do we start?

With a condition assessment across the portfolio rather than with a service contract. It costs less than being wrong, and it produces the list your budget conversation actually needs.

Can you work outside building hours?

Yes. Fire pump work in occupied buildings frequently has to happen at night or at a weekend, and that is planned rather than surcharged into a surprise.

Is a fire pump engine just a small generator engine?
